Marc Jacobs' New York City Townhouse

Marc Jacobs may be a fashion risk taker to the outside world, but he’s classic, composed and carefully curated on the inside — or his house is, anyway.

While any fan of his runway creations might assume that Jacobs’ home is full of lavish statement pieces and daring artwork, his four-story New York City townhouse is surprisingly more cozy than quirky.

“I just want to live with things I genuinely love — great Art Deco furniture, pieces from the ’70s and contemporary art,” Jacobs, 53, tells Architectural Digest in the September Style issue.

Jacobs’ list of requirements was simple for the refreshingly relaxed pad that he bought new in 2009 — “just something smart, sharp and comfortable,” he says — but the fashion mogul still sought out interior designer Thad Hayes for help overseeing the project. While discussing seating options, the pair came across one option that already had a somewhat permanent effect on Jacobs.

“We were looking at a classic boxy Jean-Michel Frank sofa and Marc said, offhandedly, ‘Of course I love it — it’s tattooed on my torso.’ Then he lifted up his shirt and showed me the couch,” Hayes recalls.

Although most of his time spent in the Greenwich Village home is remarkably low key, every so often he springs for something a smidge more high profile: “Now and then Sofia [Coppola] and I host what we call our ‘adult dinners,’ where we dress up and put out the good crystal and silver for a multi-course meal. That’s as fancy as it gets,” he says.

His favorite activity, however, still remains as relatable as ever: cuddling on the couch with his Insta-famous pup, Neville.
