Diving back in! A newly single Sean Penn went on a date with CSI: NY‘s Emmanuelle Vaugier, following his split from Charlize Theron, Us Weekly can exclusively reveal.
The Oscar winner was joined on Tuesday, Aug. 4, by the CSI: NY star for a one-on-one dinner at West Hollywood hot spot Madeo, where an observer tells Us inside details. Penn, 54, and Vaugier, 39, were seated at a corner booth table tucked away towards the back of the main dining area of the restaurant.
For the night out, Penn opted for jeans and a gray leather jacket, while Vaugier dressed in a first date-appropriate black halter dress. The eyewitness tells Us that the stars “seemed to have good chemistry” and their conversation flowed throughout dinner.
Once they were done with their cozy meal, Penn and Vaugier walked out to the back patio of the restaurant, where they were able to enjoy a more private conversation. Penn seemed relaxed and smoked a cigarette, while Vaugier nursed a vodka martini.
The insider adds that that the One Tree Hill actress was smiling and laughing throughout their conversation, and the Milk actor held eye contact and did a lot of the talking.
Us Weekly broke the news that Penn and his fiancee, fellow Oscar winner Theron, had called it quits after nearly a year and a half together. One source told Us that Theron, 39, was the one to end the engagement. “Charlize wasn’t responding to his calls and texts,” an insider told Us. “She just cut it off.”

Since the breakup, Theron has adopted her second child, a baby sister for her 4-year-old son Jackson. She and Penn awkwardly reunited on July 29, for reshoots in South Africa, for their film The Last Face, which Penn directed.
In addition to Theron, Penn has romanced some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including ex-girlfriend Scarlett Johansson, and ex-wives Madonna and Robin Wright. He was spotted in late June treating Friday Night Lights actress Minka Kelly to a pricey dinner with a group of her pals at Thomas Keller’s renowned Napa restaurant, The French Laundry.
